About Us
The Founder's Story
In 2020, Dr. Mathew Harper met then Benjamin Maciel as a Medical Student who was interested in Anesthesia, specifically in a rural setting. Since their first meeting Dr. Harper and now Dr. Maciel have become good friends and business partners interested in purchasing existing practices and recruiting future physicians to rural underserved areas where they are needed the most!
Dr. Mathew Harper attended Tulane University School of Medicine and completed his Anesthesia residency at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. In between Medical School and Residency, he volunteered for the Military as a flight surgeon serving in the United States Air Force, 779th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, Andrews Air Force Base, MD from 2006-2009. Currently Dr. Harper resides in Santa Rosa, California and is a founding partner of Progressive Anesthesia Consultants of California PC.
Dr. Maciel attended Columbia Southern University majoring in Healthcare Administration and graduated from Washington University School of Health & Science. During medical school Dr. Maciel purchased 31 units of real estate, served as President of the SGA and was a graduate speaker. Dr. Maciel currently resides in Portland, OR.
SORDS mission is to educate and recruit international medical students to where they are needed the most throughout Rural America and to build a community for physicians to grow inside and outside of medicine. Society of Rural Doctors started out as an idea and is now a thriving community with over 100+ members across the country with a goal to achieve 1000 members in the next 5 years.
